Physical and Psychological Impact of Limb Loss Among Haiti Earthquake
Survivors
This call will address the physical and mental health implications of
amputation. Speakers will review epidemiology, physiology and
classifications of limb loss; compare and contrast the incidence and
management of limb loss in the United States with the Haiti Earthquake;
review amputee pre-operative predictors of outcome for rehabilitation
and lifelong follow through; and discuss essential information for the
management of psychosocial issues following limb loss.

Influenza Vaccine Update
CDC experts will provide an update on influenza vaccine and Vaccine
Adverse Event Report System (VAERS). This call will cover Advisory
Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendations for use of
influenza vaccines; recent epidemiologic findings and vaccine coverage
for groups at higher risk for influenza-related complications; U.S.
safety monitoring in place for 2009 Influenza A (H1N1) monovalent
vaccines; and preliminary findings from the U.S. Vaccine Adverse Event
Reporting System.

Haiti Pre-decision Briefs for Public Health Action - CDC - Feb 25
In order to prepare for potential outbreaks or epidemics of infectious
disease as a result of the earthquake in Haiti, CDC subject matter
experts (SME) have prepared a series of short pre-decisional briefs for
public health action on specific high-priority threats. These briefs
have been designed to provide key recommendations with relevant
background information for decision makers in the Haiti Ministry of
Health, the U.S. Government, non-governmental organizations, and

Updated: Guidance for Healthcare Providers Assisting Travelers Preparing
for Haiti Earthquake Response - CDC - Feb 24
The vaccine recommendations on this page are based on diseases
previously observed in Haiti and the possibility for outbreaks in the
aftermath of the earthquake. At this time, vaccines for diseases such as
polio, cholera, and meningitis are not recommended.

Influenza Situation Update
Weekly FluView Map and Surveillance Report - CDC - Feb 26
During week 7 (February 14-20, 2010), influenza activity remained at
approximately the same levels as last week in the U.S. One hundred and
eighty five (4.4%) specimens tested by U.S. World Health Organization
(WHO) and National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System
(NREVSS) collaborating laboratories and reported to CDC/Influenza
Division were positive for influenza.

Influenza and Pneumonia-Associated Hospitalizations and Deaths from
August 30 to February 20, 2010 - CDC - Feb 26
FluView reports that for the week of February 14 - 20, 2010, flu
activity in the United States remained about the same level as the
previous week. All subtyped influenza A viruses reported to CDC were
2009 influenza A (H1N1) viruses.

WHO Updates International H1N1 Situation - WHO - Feb 26
As of 21 February 2010, worldwide more than 213 countries and overseas
territories or communities have reported laboratory confirmed cases of
pandemic influenza H1N1 2009, including at least 16,226 deaths.

2009 Influenza Key Points and Messages
* Asthma is the most common underlying health condition reported
among adult 2009 H1N1 hospitalizations and was reported in 30% of adults
hospitalized with 2009 H1N1 flu, according to EIP data.
* Diabetes is the second most common underlying condition
associated with 2009 H1N1 hospitalization, accounting for 23% of those
hospitalizations in adults.
* Minority groups have consistently had higher rates of serious
2009 H1N1 disease, including hospitalizations, than non-minority groups,
when comparing hospitalization rates across racial/ethnic groups during
the spring-summer versus the fall-winter.
* On February 24, 2010 the Advisory Committee on Immunization
Practices (ACIP) <http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/recs/acip/> voted to
expand the recommendation for annual influenza vaccination to include
all people aged 6 months and older.

FDA Update on the Investigation into the Salmonella Montevideo Outbreak
- FDA - Feb 25
The Food and Drug Administration, along with the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food
Safety and Inspection Service, continues to work closely with the Rhode
Island Department of Health and other states in the investigation of an
outbreak of Salmonella Montevideo infections associated with certain
Italian-style sausage products including salami/salame.
