COMMON INFECTIOUS DISEASES ENCOUNTERED IN DENTISTRY

A LIVE WEBINAR PRESENTED BY:
Raghu Puttaiah, MPH
Associate Professor of Oral Diagnosis
Baylor College of Dentistry

WHEN
Tuesday, December 8, 2009
12:00-1:30 PM ET

SUMMARY
Dentistry is predominantly a surgical field with potential exposure to
blood and saliva. Apart from bloodborne conditions, there are
respiratory diseases that also pose a risk including newer epidemics and
pandemics such as SARS and H1N1 Influenza outbreaks in the population.
Some of the bloodborne conditions encountered are Hepatitis B, Hepatitis
C, Hepatitis D and G, Herpes and HIV. Immunizable childhood diseases are
also important to understand. Diseases such as Tuberculosis, Influenza
(seasonal flu as well as the new H1N1 flu) are also of concern with
respect to transmission risks to employees as well as the patient.
Understanding these common infectious conditions and implementing
protective measures is not only pragmatic but essential in disease
control at the clinical level as well as the community level. Personal
protective measures such as immunization, use of appropriate and
limitations of PPE, hand hygiene, patient and employee management
measures will help control spread of such conditions in the dental
setting.

This webinar is CE Accredited.
Although CE is available for this course, it may not meet state
requirements for infectious disease CE courses. You should check with
your state licensing body to confirm.

An archive of this webinar will be available for on-demand viewing after
the initial broadcast.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After attending this program participants will:
1. Be more knowledgeable about common infectious diseases encountered in
the dental setting
2. Understand the health risks for both patients and employees
potentially exposed to clusters, outbreaks, epidemics and pandemics of
commonly encountered infectious diseases
3. Be better informed in the methods of choosing appropriate protective
measures including PPE, hand hygiene, deferring elective care, minor
practice management efforts and restriction of clinical duties of
infected and or non-immunized employees
